RINGTEST

How the card was taught to hear a ring.

WHAT IT DID

RINGTEST ran on the BBS computer with the phone line attached. It showed two live numbers, the signal's amplitude and its zero-cross count, and let the sysop move three limits (RingLo, RingHi, RingThresh) with the keys 1, 2 and 3 until the board counted the real rings and ignored voices. Enter wrote the values into BigMouth's settings. It is a tuning tool for the card's ring detection (BigMouth 3.14i); the reconstruction is in inventory/exe_c/vendor_tools/RINGTEST/.

There is nothing to run here: a browser has no telephone line. Keys of the original: 1 and 2 move the ring window, 3 moves the threshold, Enter saves.

RINGTEST VERSION 3.00
AND BIGMOUTH VERSION 3.14i
1992 Talking Technology

Bigmouth version 3.14i incorporates a new, simple yet effective
method of ring detection. This was developed for the variable
ring frequencies that are being implemented globally, and for
better discrimination.

There are three new parameters in use:
RingHi, RingLo, and RingThresh.

(They replace RING_MINPOWER, RING_MAXQUIET, & RING_MAXCHANGE)

The new ring detection looks at two items that you will see to
the left of RINGTEST:

1) First there is the AMPLITUDE. This is the power of the ring
coming in. BIGMOUTH will not even consider the signal a
ring if the amplitude doesn't exceed RINGTHRESH.
2) Then there is the ZERO CROSS COUNT. This value (when the
phone is ringing) must consistently fall between RINGLO and
RINGHI for the signal to be recognize a ring.

USING RINGTEST

To use ringtest simply have someone call you when the program is
loaded. If the default parameters are correct, RINGTEST will
start counting the rings.

If the parameters are incorrect (no ring is showing and they do
not meet the above criterion while the phone is ringing), do the
following:

1) Look at the AMPLITUDE, if it is lower than RINGTHRESH hit
"3" and then lower RINGTHRESH until it is below your
       AMPLITUDE when the phone rings.
2) Look at ZERO CROSS COUNT. If it does not fall between the
       RINGHI - RINGLO "window" , use "1" & "2" to adjust the
       window (leave a little room , +or- 20 , to allow for
       variability )

If your parameters are TOO sensitive (voice is being considered a
ring), raise the RINGTHRESH to just below AMPLITUDE and tighten
the RING "window" (raise RINGLO & lower RINGHI around ZERO CROSS
COUNT).

When everything looks right, simply press ENTER and the program
will automatically adjust BIGMOUTH to your new values.
