DISKDUMP

Filename? Type a name from the list below. Press a key for the next page. There is no way out, so we added one.

Click the screen, type a file name at Filename? and press Enter. Any key shows the next 513 bytes. Esc or Ctrl-C ends it (the original never does).

FILES THIS VIEWER MAY OPEN (0)

Public archive files only: batch files, documents, system prompts, maze maps and the two DOS directory captures. Click a name to type it for you. Anything else (private mail, user files, call logs) is refused.

The list is empty here: the archive files are not part of this deployment.

ABOUT THIS TOOL

Recreates
DISKDUMP.EXE (Borland C++ 3.x, source DISKDUMP.C).
Date
27 Oct 1994 21:43:56
Who likely wrote it
The family, on the same Borland install as PASSCHK and RNDCHK. Max while learning C is the best fit; the father cannot be excluded (guess, DISKDUMP_NOTES.md section 5).
What changed in the web version
  • It opens only files from a public whitelist (batch files, documents, system prompts, maze maps, the two DOS directory captures). Private mail, user files, call logs and caller-ID logs can never be shown here.
  • The original reads through a NULL file pointer when the name is wrong (undefined behaviour). The web copy prints a refusal and ends instead.
  • The original has no quit key (Ctrl-Break). Esc or Ctrl-C ends this one.
Kept on purpose (the original's bugs and habits)
  • It reads 513 bytes per screen (off by one), so every page drifts by one byte, and shows only the second half (bytes 257 to 512).
  • The header always says SECTOR 600.
  • Text mode: CR LF becomes LF and a Ctrl-Z byte ends the file; after the end every byte is "ffff" for ever.
  • Bytes of 0x80 and up print as ff80 to ffff (sign extension); 0x00 to 0x0f print as a blank and one digit.
  • It does not touch any disk sector. It cannot have made ZZZZZZZZ.DAT.
